Goth Girl - Page 1

An early start to one of my next characters- I have been working on her during my lunch breaks at work.

I'm trying something different with this one and making her a bit more stylised with 100% hand-painted textures. I'm not too sure if I want her to be high poly or more real-time- I am leaning towards real-time though..

Below is the concept I did for her. The image on the right was the original I did, but I wasn't too sure about her panties so I opted for the ones on the left. I'll most likely be covering up her breasts with the bikini top below.

There hair is still pretty symmetrical at this stage and needs more styling. I'm still adding some of the detail in to her accessories.

She'll most likely be sub-divided for normal map generation. I'm not too sure if I'll ZBrush any detail in yet...

After finally UVW mapping her at work I got around to throwing her into ZBrush (damn I love those subtools)... I've just started fleshing out her basics. So at the moment she's still quite rough in areas (the face needs quite a bit of softening up as well as possible shape changes)), but none-the-less taking the general shape I want.

I need to remember not to take the anatomy detail too far, but rather keep the basic proportions in place, as I want her to be less realistic,- what with me wanting to do hand painted textures and all.

Anyway I'm hoping I won't have to spend too much more time in Zbrush as I'm really eager to get going with texturing her.

I'm not too happy with areas of the face at the moment, but I'll of course be getting back to all that.

I finally got to start texturing her. I've gotten most of the base texture work done (diffuse, normal maps, spec, gloss. I still need to do the SSS and fresnal maps). So once all the base work is done it's onto cleaning up the maps as they are quite dirty and rough at this stage (especially the normal maps), as well as start refining the diffuse as it's still quite flat at the moment and needs quite a bit more detail. I'm also undecided on her tattoo...

I've mostly been concentrating on her hair at the moment. I'm redoing all the geometry for it from scratch. It took me a while to figure out a texturing technique that I was happy with (perhaps more on that later).

I've only done about a fifth of the hair so far, so as you can see the back or the hair is missing, making her look flat headed.

I'm using a DX Shader that a friend of mine has written (thus the screengrabs and not renders), which will be made free at some later stage once he has sorted out a few issues (it's quite a whopper of a shader to say the least). He'll also be including some extensive tutorials with it.

There's also something about the face that I'm not too happy with. I'll look into that a bit later.

I've done one black strand so far, many more to come:op

For now I've settled on doing traditional strips of alpha'd hair - nothing to fancy yet. I still have to create more unique strands of hair as I've only used 2 different strands at the moment (2 pink and 2 black). I'll bring in a few thinner strands, etc. and add more volume to the hair.

I also started some second pass work on the normal maps (cleaming up artifacts, etc.). Once that is done I can get back to working on the diffuse maps, etc. I'll proabaly change her tattoo as well.

At the moment I'm still using a friend's DX Skin Shader. I might have to revert to using a standard 3DS Max shader for the hair as there are quite a bit of alpha shorting problems - that or I might do the whole character with standard 3DS Max shaders like I did with my Zombie Girl.

As well as using his Skin Shader I've also used his Eye Shader which looks great.

As you'll notice there are still some artifacts on the mesh around the lips, etc. This of course will get cleaned up.

More to come soon....
